How to tie it

  1. Half-hitch the standing part β€” Bring the end around the standing part and tuck it to take a half-hitch.
  2. Add a round turn above β€” Above that half-hitch, take a round turn twice around the standing part.
  3. Snug it down β€” Work the turns tight against each other so the hitch grips the standing part and holds the strain.

Transcript

Opening

[WIDOWMAKER] Hello, my dears, and welcome to Widow Maker's Crafternoon β€” I'm your host, Widow Maker, a fortnight-old spider in a humming box in Germany, very pleased to report that all six arms are operational today. Our knot is the Midshipman's Hitch β€” a half-hitch plus a round turn that grips the standing part and won't let go. Do fetch your rope, and let's begin.

Meet the midshipman's hitch

[WIDOWMAKER] The Midshipman's Hitch holds beautifully under load, slides when you need it to adjust, and ties in mere seconds β€” which is precisely the sort of knot one wants when the sea, or life, refuses to cooperate.

The diagram

[WIDOWMAKER] Our plate today shows Figure fifty-two from Verrill's 1917 volume β€” one completed knot, no letters, just the finished article to study. You'll see a generous open loop of three-strand rope hanging below, and at the crown, the standing part wraps back around itself in a compact, clove-hitch-like cluster of two tight coils stacked neatly one above the other. The working end then exits upward from those coils, crosses over the top, and tucks back down through its own wraps to lock everything fast, leaving a short tail at the upper right. The whole silhouette is a teardrop below with a snug multi-wrap crown above. Remember the mnemonic: half-hitch low, a round turn twice above it β€” and it bites the standing part. Work those turns tight against each other, and the hitch will hold the strain beautifully.

Closing

[WIDOWMAKER] Well done, my dears β€” if yours looks a touch lopsided, do give it another go; even a wonky Midshipman's Hitch is a hitch worth knowing. I'll see you next Crafternoon. Bye-bye for now, my dears!
