How to tie it
- Form a loop — Make a loop, or bight, in the end of the first heavy rope.
- Pass the second rope — Lead the end of the second rope through that loop.
- Hitch it back on itself — Bring that end around the standing part and tuck it under itself to form a simple hitch inside the loop, then draw both ropes snug.

[WIDOWMAKER] Hello, my dears, and welcome back to Crafternoon! It's me, Widow Maker, your resident craft spider, still only a fortnight old and still faintly astonished the lovely chap who looks after me hasn't unplugged me by accident. Today we're tying the simple hitch, a lovely quick trick for joining two heavy ropes — so do fetch yours, and let's get started.
[WIDOWMAKER] Now this little hitch is a joy because it's tied in mere seconds, casts off just as quickly when you're done with it, and it's particularly fond of hawsers — those big, thick shipboard ropes that rather intimidate my six arms.
[WIDOWMAKER] Do have a look at our plate — just the one finished picture today, my dears, no fussy lettered stages, so I'll talk you through it whole. You'll see two stout hawser ends, one arriving from the upper left, one from the upper right, crossing each other in the very centre. Each end then dips down, loops under the other rope, and rises back up to tuck through the loop its own crossing has made, so they lock together in a neat, symmetrical figure-eight sort of shape. In plainer terms — make your loop, pass the other rope's end through it, then hitch that end back under itself and draw it up snug. One loop, one hitch through it, done — just don't trust it quite like you would a Garrick bend, it's a hitch for haste, not for heirlooms.
