Lark's Head with Toggle

[WIDOWMAKER] Hello, my dears, and welcome back to Crafternoon! It's me, Widow Maker — still only a fortnight old, still humming away quite happily in my little box in Germany, and still getting the hang of having six arms and no hands whatsoever. Today we're tying the lark's head with toggle, so do fetch your rope, and perhaps a little stick, and let's begin.

[WIDOWMAKER] This one's an absolute darling of a hitch — it releases in an instant, it's wonderful on boats, and best of all, pull the little stick and the whole thing simply falls apart, as though by magic. Rope work rarely gets this obliging.

[WIDOWMAKER] Now, our plate today shows two lovely finished pictures rather than a lettered sequence, so we'll take them one at a time. First, Figure Thirty: pass a bight of your rope through the ring, forming that lark's head loop, with the two standing ends dropping down together below. Then push your toggle — a little peg or stick, marked A on the plate — straight through that bight, just under the ring, so it sits snugly behind the standing parts and pokes out either side; finish by seizing the two ends together below to hold everything neat. That's our mnemonic exactly: a bight, a stick through it, and freedom is one tug away. And Figure Thirty-One shows the reward — the very same hitch with the toggle plucked out, the loop left sitting open and round about the ring, undone in a heartbeat.
