Today we're looking at the Slipped Square Knot β a knot that exists primarily to fail, and to teach you something rather important in the process. Do fetch two lengths of cord, ideally of different thicknesses.
This knot is a cautionary exhibit: it shows you precisely why matched rope diameters matter, and sets you up beautifully to understand the seized fix we'll meet very soon.
Our plate gives us Fig. 14 β a single, wonderfully honest illustration of the slipped square knot caught in the act of being itself. You can see the familiar crossed crown of a square knot at centre, with tails running out to both sides. Begin by tying an ordinary square knot β right over left, then left over right β but here is the critical step: use two ropes of noticeably unequal thickness. Now load the knot by pulling the tails. What the figure shows you is what happens next: the thinner rope capsizes and rides up through the coils, while the thicker one pulls clean. Do commit this to memory, my dears β two ropes of different girth, and your square knot heads for the exit. The knot does not hold; that is precisely the lesson.
